Class of 2019

Our inaugural class took place in January 2019 with 19 students graduating from the program. The students were selected for the program by youth counselors at the SHALK (Shaping Hope and Leadership in Kliptown) community center. They came from the townships of Kliptown and Freedom Park.

We held our classroom training sessions at the SHALK and partnered with local production companies and studios to take the students on field trips, so they could see production crews in action. The first trip was to Sasani Studios, which is one of the biggest studios and post-production facilities in Johannesburg. The second trip was to a live taping of the TV series, MTV Shuga Down South, The Preview Show produced by Burnt Onion Productions

For their final film projects, our students completed two short videos; a documentary, My Ride, My Life–about the conflict between Uber drivers and taxi drivers in Johannesburg; and a music video, Sick System “A Twist of Tales,” written by one of our students, about life in Freedom Park, exposing stereotypes within the community. The students received certificates of completion and showcased their film projects during a reception held at The Soweto Hotel & Conference Center.
